ConverSLations with Chance Raynier
In an effort for all of us to get to know each other better, I’ve decided to conduct some friendly (and not at all prying) questionnaires. I hope it’ll help connect us to others, and bring our little community closer. Today, we have Chance Raynier.
What’s your SL name and what do people call you? My SL name is Chance Raynier. People call me Chance, some closer friends like to call me Chancey, Chancey Pants. My wife Gabriella calls me Mon amour, mon Chance, spicy Cajun, and naughty Cajun.
How old is your avatar? Is it your first? Chance is 3 years 11 months; 1436 days, my SL birth date is 09/20/2009. This is not my first avatar, however my original avatar has not been logged in since created Chance.
Do you have any SL family or RL family in SL? I do not have an SL family, though I do consider Gabriella my wife to be my family. I do not have any RL family in SL.
How old are you and where do you live? I am 40 years old and live in Los Angeles, California.
What’s your home life like? My home life is great. I have a supportive, loving and very close family. My two brothers and mother have helped me since the moment I became ill. I am very lucky to have them.
Why did you join SL? In 2004 I was diagnosed with multiple illnesses, the prominent being Fibromyalgia and chronic migraines, borderline Lupus and Occipital neuralgia. What all that means in a nutshell is that I am in pain 24/7 with very little to no relief. I have lived in pain without a pain-free day for over 8 years. The past 5 years have been the worst and it has robbed me of many things in my life. Due to my illnesses I stopped being able to socialize, be creative or go out and enjoy life. My best friend actually found SecondLife, and asked me to come check it out – we have gamed together for many years and engaged in very heavy roleplay in those games. We came for the roleplay but that actually did not happen to be something we found here in SL at the time, so I was going to quit. But then, I met a girl, and she changed everything for the better.
What do you do in SL? I spend most of my time in SL with mon amour Gabriella, my wife. When we are not out dancing, listening to live music or roleplaying, I blog at chanceraynier.wordpress.com
When and how did you start? I began blogging in May of 2011. I started after mon ami Harlow Heslop encouraged me to blog male fashion. I was afraid, but I craved creativity so badly, it felt so empty and vacant in my creative soul to not be doing something artistic for you see I am an animation major, a comic book inker, and a forever doodler. I have higher education in fine art photography where I spent several years in a true darkroom creating black and white images. I am also a writer, I love to creatively write which is why I absolutely love to roleplay. I wanted to enter into the world of comic creation but my illnesses struck fiercely my last year of university and nearly jeopardized graduation, but I am thankful to say that I do hold my degree despite my trials that last year.
When not working in SL, what are you doing? I game, mostly MMORPGs or the like. I have taken up writing and drawing again, though the drawing is still very daunting for I shake quite horribly due to my illnesses which makes it very hard to create. I love to read, and music is a major part of my life, at no time do I let there be silence if I can control it, music must be playing. Though I do not get out much do to the limitations caused by my illnesses, past necessary errands and doctor appointments, I do make time when I am feeling capable to go out to eat with family or take in a movie or play. In November I have tickets to see Sarah Brightman with mon Mama as we both love her, and that will be the first time I attend a concert live since 2008 when I last saw Morrissey at the Hollywood Palladium. I am very eager for November to come around!
Who is the most fun/interesting person you’ve worked with? There are so many interesting and fun people in SecondLife. The first person to make that fun/interesting list was Gabriella. Soon after, we met the lovely Harlow Heslop and I do have a grand time with her when we do get the opportunity to socialize. Photos Nikolaidis is one of the most interesting people I have ever met (live or virtually). I had the absolute pleasure of working with him when he asked me to be a part of his photography installment entitled Dreams. I was forever changed being a part of his vision.
Who do you want to work with? I would love to work with Zane Audran and Cad Lorakeet. Both have such creative images, they truly take their photographs to a level that intrigues me and I would be honored to do something with them.
What do you wish you could do in SL? Create mesh clothing and accessories.
What is your favourite post/picture? My favorite picture thus far is this. The image is not altered as I do not Photoshop my images, I like to utilize windlight in world to capture the look I am trying to achieve. In this image I was able to use all the lighting on the street of this sim and still get the rain effect from the sim itself too. I just love the composition as it captured exactly the feeling I had at the time and the image came out better than I had expected.
What is your one SL vice or guilty pleasure? My SL vice would likely be KittyCats. I used to have about 180. Then I cut them down little by little over the years so that now I have an intimate collection of 20. I can’t have a cat in real life due to allergies in the family, so I definitely overcompensated for that when I first started breeding KittyCats. I do not breed anymore but it was great fun.
What is the oldest thing (you can find) in your inventory? From 2009, a fire juggler kit.
If you had to describe yourself in three words, what would they be? Cajun, geek, romantic.
Does SL influence your RL style? Vise versa? My SL style is very similar to my RL style. Bow ties and vests, brogues and pinstripes. I only wish I could find more vests in SL!
What’s your favourite pasttime? My favorite pastime is listening to music and being creative.
Anything else you want to share? Thank you for reading, and if anyone ever wants to do some photos or blog something with me please do not hesitate to contact me, I promise I won’t douse you with Tabasco too much!
