ConverSLations with Scout Eberhardt

In an effort for all of us to get to know each other better, I’ve decided to conduct some friendly (and not at all prying) questionnaires. I hope it’ll help connect us to others, and bring our little community closer. Today, we have Scout Eberhardt.

Scout Eberhardt

What’s your SL name and what do people call you? Well, the official name is Scout Eberhardt but I never go with that because well, it isn’t me. I use and go by Scout Danger which suits me much better. However people call me Short Stuff, Hey You, Lil Elfy and Scouty.

How old is your avatar? Is it your first? According to the Lindens, We Have Heard On High, I am currently four. I will be turning five in November.

Scout is my first and original avatar. Normally if I am on SL, I am Scout.

Do you have any SL family or RL family in SL? I have a tiny family in SL. A brother and sister. I met them within days of starting Second Life.

How old are you and where do you live? Are you asking in real years or in mental years? Mentally my age varies minute to minute. One minute I am way over 50, the next I am still riding my tricycle. Life is made of experiences and age winds up not mattering a whole lot in the end…

Currently my gypsy moving rear is back with family in Ohio.

What’s your home life like? Well, when I am with family, I live on a farm in the middle of the country. We have horses, and cows, and all sorts of exotic farm life here.

Thankfully my rl career allows me to go where I want to go cause I don’t have an office and I am mistress of my own destiny.

Why did you join SL? Honestly, I was bored. Yeah I know it is a really lame excuse. I think I was watching a rerun of The Office and saw Dwight create Dwight on Second Life on the show. It had me laughing so hard I had to check it out.

What do you do in SL? In Second Life, I own a store named Sanctuaire. So, normally I am building or creating things for the store in Photoshop. I am also currently neck deep in Maya.

When and how did you start? As you can now figure out, I don’t follow instructions and I answered this question in the Why did you join SL question… Go fig. Yeah, I know. But why color in the lines, lines are boring.

When not working in SL, what are you doing? At the moment what I do when I am not in SL is work on my rl job. Or I spend time with my fiance. Recently, due to some rl events in his life I have been busy trying to keep him smiling so we have been doing a ton of xbox and ps3.

Who is the most fun/interesting person you’ve worked with? I don’t know. I think everyone in SL is pretty interesting to one level or another. However with quite a few of you, you have me shaking my head in utter dismay by your choices. But differences and uniqueness are what make the world and our lives fun and interesting.

Who do you want to work with? I would love to work with people who want to work with me. Yeah, I know. TBH, as a creator of content in Second Life who isn’t extremely well known as of yet, you often feel like small child looking at all the people at the big kids table going – when will I be big enough to come play with you too?

Yeah, that probably didn’t come off right but it is a good analogy of what being a newer creator is like in SL. A lot of time, you just want to be invited by the big kids to come play too.

What do you wish you could do in SL? My sarcastic answer is : I wish I could fart rainbows. But I actually have the ability to do that on my hud. What I really wish is that I wish I could change peoples opinions about looking down on creators who use a few templates.

When, my store started, because I didn’t have the ability to create mesh, I was using templates. If a creator is able to think outside the box and can mod said templates to a degree that they no longer appear to be a template – they shouldn’t be looked down upon. Plus, templates for new creators are awesome for them to learn on. You can see what can and can not be done with what you are given. It doesn’t mean the creator is more or less creative than someone who is using all original content. Sometimes they are learning and just need help to become better.

What is your favourite creation? The best things I have made in SL are my houses. I love building houses. I think the two best are my Sans Souci Cottage and my Catskills Cottage. I also have a weird love for my Fais Do Do house too because that thing took so long to create because I got crazy about getting the details right.

What is your favourite post/picture? My favourite blog entry was about this complaint letter that I received that was just rude. My problem is when I get mad, I get sarcastic and have been told really funny. So I wrote an entry called “How not to write an issue note to a creator”. Where basically I went off on some stuff. I have been told it was pretty funny but easy to understand for people who have issues.

What is your one SL vice or guilty pleasure? My vice in Second Life is honestly shopping. I will buy pretty much anything at any time. I joke that I am trying to aid the economy of SL on a daily basis.

I am not huge on group gatherings, I tend to be the elf in the corner feeling awkward or because I have a project I would rather be doing in Photoshop or Maya.

What is the oldest thing (you can find) in your inventory? I recently cleaned out my inventory cause it was a hot ass mess. Normally I am really organized to a point that I have taken a pic and shown it to people who go – ok, OCD much. But I did dig up this devil slapper thing I have that I just can’t get rid of. It is this devil on a stick that when you hit someone it makes a slapping noise.

If you had to describe yourself in three words, what would they be? 1) To smart for own good, put hyphens in there to make it one word if you wish.

2) Sarcastic – some say it is just a smart mouth, but I often spend a lot of time in world just shaking my head in dismay at stuff.

3) Weird – I don’t see Second Life or life in general, the way a lot of people do. I get told it is cause I am artsy fartsy.

Does SL influence your RL style? Vise versa? Well, for me personally, Second Life is an extension of Real Life. So yeah, I have weird colored hair in RL and tats and piercings. I am also really small in RL. But Scout just has a ton more clothes. I mean, no one has a house large enough to store her wardrobe. It is rather embarrassing.

What’s your favourite pasttime? In Real Life? Well, I draw a ton. One of my degrees is in art so I spend a ton of time just doodling stuff. I also will read anything, and I do mean anything. I like to people watch too. Oh, and spend time with the fiance killing stuff in xbox or ps3 and just laughing at each other.

In Second Life? I love to build. It calms my brain when I am building things. I have pretty bad ADHD and my brain is always in a billion and one places at one time. For some reason when I am in my hyper focus building mode – my brain goes quiet. Much to the dismay of my friends who go – I messaged you, you didn’t respond. Most of the time it is cause I honestly I didn’t see you – tunnel building vision.

Anything else you want to share? Okay, I am going to share a small irritant that I have with the way some people behave like their behavior in Second Life doesn’t matter as a whole.

In my opinion, Second Life is a microcosm of RL. Who you really are is often amplified in here. However I have found that a few people think that Second Life is an off shoot of high school and need to be bullies and just mean to others. I feel that people often need a reminder of – “Hey, person here behind this keyboard.” For the most part, we are adults, we need to act like them.

Also, please use your brains when you are in here. For some reason we enter Second Life and common sense just goes — whoosh out the window.

Jumping off my soap box right about… now.

On a lighter thought – most of you guys really, really crack me up laughing. I really enjoy speaking to you when I am not working. I love seeing other people’s perspectives on things. I may not always agree with them, but I love seeing them.
