Promoting your blog via your SL Profile

There are many Social Media platforms out there, for you to use to promote your blog and get feedback and interaction. The big ones we all know; Facebook, Twitter, Plurk and Flickr. But did you know you can use your Second Life Profile as a Social Media network too?
It’s free, it is a part of your Second Life account and you will be surprised on how many people actually use it to get information or discover new places, fashion and blogs. As long as you know how to use it – it is a great platform to ‘get your blog out there’!

I am aware many people use viewers that will provide them with the socalled ‘legacy’ profiles and not the web-based ones, and for using your profile as a Social Media platform you will need to use either the web-based profile in your viewer or….and this is very handy: the browser-version of your SL profile!
You can go to your SL profile in three ways: the first one is obvious, when inworld just go to your profile (unless you use legacy profiles), the second one is via the dashboard on www.secondlife.com and then go to ‘Check out my Second Life now’, see screenshot below

SL Feed dashboard

Or make a bookmark to your SL Profile on (in my case) https://my.secondlife.com/caitlin.tobias – just replace my name for yours and tataaa, you are there.

For the dashboard or the direct link, you do not even need to be inworld (making it a great way to keep in touch with friends, for when you are not able to be inworld as well!)

The profiles in browser are often referred to as : ‘the sl feeds’. That’s because we all have our own ‘feed’, in which we can post status updates, post pictures, optional with a location (when you post directly from Inworld)

So you have your own feed already, and you can follow other people.
You, by default, follow everyone on your friendslist, but you can also follow people whose posts/pics you like, rather than friend them inworld you just follow their ‘feed’. Also, you can unfollow friends without unfriending, in the ‘people’ tab – they will not get a notification.

When a post gets two ‘loves’ or more, it will appear in the ‘trending’ feed, a collection of all the posts made by everyone (so not just your friends, but all SL residents who use this) and this is why using the feed in your profile is great to promote your blog!

I  recommend you put links to your blog, flickr and whatnot in your profile, for those who see your posts on the feed and checking you out.

So you have your own feed, and you can follow other people. You, by default, follow everyone on your friendslist, but you can also follow people whose posts/pics you like, rather than friend them inworld you just follow their ‘feed’.
When a post gets 2 ‘loves’ or more, it will appear in the ‘trending’ feed, a collection of all posts made by everyone (so not just your friends, but all SL residents who use this) and this is why using the feed in your profile is great to promote your blog!

For example, the ones I follow:

SL Feed - VII

and this is how ‘trending’ looks, those are people I probably follow – but also the posts from all other residents with a minimum of 2 ‘loves’:

SL Feed - V

If you have a blogpost ready and published, all you need to do is: go somewhere inworld, take a snapshot – and when you choose snapshot in the menu, choose: upload to profile. In the description you can then paste a link to the blogpost you published, and optional some text. If you like you can even tick the location for a landmark, though I would un-tick it if you take the pic in your private home :).

SL Feed - VIII

SL Feed - VI

Your post will be appear on all your friends profile feeds, and once it has  two ‘loves’ it will be out in the public (trending). To speed that up, you can love the post yourself – all you then need is just one other love. Or more, of course!

Note: yes you can post without snapshots as well, just type in an update (like FB or Twitter) and it will be posted.

The nice thing about this SL feed is that it’s totally linked to your SL account, it reaches SL residents and it is easy to use. In the ‘settings’ you can select some privacy if you wish. People you have muted/blocked in SL will not be able to see your feed, they cannot comment or love your posts, however once a post is in trending they will be able to just see it.

I would say: go try it out, follow some people, give loves (it is Social after all!)  and post your pics and links! See it as a mix between Twitter and Facebook, keep your posts short (there is an – unknown- limit of characters) and sweet, and have fun!

Happy posting and see you on the SL Feed!
